The 2023 BMW i4 eDrive35 is a rear-wheel drive electric liftback. It has a 70.2 kWh battery with a net capacity of 66 kWh. The i4 eDrive35 can charge at a maximum of 11 kW on AC current and 180 kW on DC current.

Regarding fast charging, the i4 eDrive35 is somewhat behind – not only compared to the 40, but also to the competition. This is particularly noticeable when the charge level reaches 50 to 60 per cent, after which it takes significantly longer for the charge level indicator in the cockpit to move further to the right. If you regularly travel longer distances and want to complete them with as few charging stops as possible, go for the large battery. With the 35, many but shorter charging stops would be more appropriate to take advantage of the window with the higher charging power. A quick charging stop every 150 kilometers is probably different from what BMW’s premium customers expect – even in a basic model.

However, if the daily driving distance is less than 200 kilometers and you can charge your i4 at home or work with AC, the differences between the 35 and 40 are shockingly small. However, the price difference of 2,700 euros is also manageable. So unless there is a fixed budget limit and you would rather have another equipment package than a practical range of 84 kilometers, many customers will probably go for the iDrive40.

BMW i4 eDrive40 2024

The BMW i4 eDrive40 is a rear-wheel drive electric car with a single 335 horsepower motor. It has a battery capacity of 83.9 kWh, with a usable capacity of 80.7 kWh. A fully charged battery can provide a range of about 320 miles.

According to Car and Driver, the eDrive40 has an estimated driving range of 300 miles. However, Edmunds says the EPA-estimated range is 283 miles for the 19-inch wheel version, and 301 miles for the base 18-inch wheel version. Digital Trends says the BMW i4 is a luxurious sedan that costs less than the Tesla Model S, and is one of the best electric sedans in its price range.

Electric vehicles don’t just compete against each other. In the BMW i4 sedan’s case, it’s also compared against every gas-powered M car before it. With that in mind, the i4 has to serve two orders; performance driving and maximum range. The first it does incredibly well. The xDrive40 and M50 models shell out 396 and 536 horsepower, respectively. We give the i4 M50 credit for having better ride-and-handling than the M3, which is already one of our favorite high-performance sedans. In terms of range, the xDrive40 goes the longest of the i4 options with an EPA range of 307 miles. And it has decent DC-fast charging capabilities with speeds of up to 200 kW. The i4 makes for a comfy daily driver with excellent performance when the right pedal asks for it, but dull steering is an example of where technology has gone a little too far. Also, the i4 has a hatchback trunk, which gives it added flexibility when stacking cargo behind its rear seats.

BMW adds an all-wheel drive i4 xDrive40 with 396 horsepower to its lineup for 2024. The dual electric motors power the newest addition to the i4 lineup to an EPA-estimated 307 miles of total driving range with the standard 18-inch wheels, and an estimated 282 miles with the optional 19-inch wheels. Short of the new trim level, the i4 remains mostly unchanged from last year.
